The people around me all seem relatively calm but I'd guess most of us are all filled with conflict. A small part of us wants to be neighborly, but mostly we want out.

So it's been about a year and a half since I first began my venture in the media world. I've written looooots of music, learned lots of things, and had some mighty successes. There have been some key successes along the way which give me hope for the future. The Advent Conspiracy promo landed over 800,000 hits, I landed a final with Massive Music New York which aired on National Television. I got the chance to work with Brent Asbury (Pinback), Dennis Culp (Five Iron Frenzy) and other exceptional people at Singing Serpent in San Diego. I also landed a final with them(a la Al Green/70's r&B, who'd have thought!) for Glory Foods.

Amongst the most exciting developments in my professional career are those surrounding Blue Scout Music. Blue Scout is a Portland based music production and licensing studio. We write music for many Portland based agencies and production companies, and we place music on lots of hip TV shows. Joey Prather is at the center of Blue Scout. At first I was a bit pessimistic that Joey's interest in working with me would materialize, but we have a studio space in downtown Portland and are proudly making our livings doing what we love.

I am learning quickly that the as long as I am in this industry, my spiritual duty will be to keep it from dominating my life. That is why I am forming a band with my wife.

Life is short.

Advent Conspiracy

Did this with Jon Collins. It's taken me a long time, I've had some bumps and scrapes. I've disappointed some people and impressed others. I've worked on many low or no pay gigs composing for corporate web-only advertising, online flash games, private corporate presentations, and web sites, I've finally accomplished something really substantial. There is a Canadian clothing company called 'Blue Notes.' They actually have really hip clothing. Anyway I will have my music on a big budget, nationwide TV commercial for them. I got the gig through Massive Music NYC. Anyway it was an amazing feeling and quite truthfully I hope it's the first of many. It's crazy to me to think about how many hours of work and prep this accomplishment took.

I can't post the video yet because it's not airing but when it does you can be sure.

HOORAY FOR CANADA.

music for web pages

hey all, here's some loops, etc. that I've worked up over the last few months for friends/clients...

Tyler Gould- This is a newer friend of mine. He's a Portland area photography/video freelancer. Highly recommend his services. In order to enjoy the track I created you must locate the mp3 player at the bottom right and select 'seeking new hope.' Tyler asked me to compose this piece as an imitation of an older Nine Inch Nails track. It was a suprisingly beautiful and atmospheric track to start with. other track on there is by an old friend of mine, the exceptionally talented Jon Hastings. He was in several bands out of Salem a few years back and is now a designer and session drummer in LA. His brother Kevin Hastings, plays keys for the legendary pop icon, Rihanna. Props.

Monica Pynch- My sister-in-law is another exceptional talented media person here in Oregon. She designed my web page and I highly recommend her. She just finished her web page. Several months back she asked me to compose a loop in the vein of Death Cab for Cutie for her web page. Not a problem

Casa Kimball- This was another job from my good friends at Jess3. This is a good thing. I'm officially part of the team at Atomicon. That'll be a blast. Atomicon is a promising new music house venture in the Portland area headed up by David Weiner. Hopefully we'll be able to break down the doors of Weiden , BPN, and other big agencies here in Portland and abroad. Working on a Royal Bank of Canada spot right now. That on is for Massive in NY. Also it looks like I might get a chance to do a few demos for Singing Serpent in San Diego. These guys are doing some fantastic work, check it out.

In other news, Amy and I have been talking for a while about putting together a fun band. I dunno, just beats, happy melodies, summer time, and fun. We've worked out a few songs. Long ways to go if we want to be presentable. I also have jammed a few times with Ruth and Bryan Beck. They are more talented than me.

I finished Ezra Carey's album. type='text'>poo gas

So Joey Prather and myself spent some time song writing. Over all the experience was very good and we both hope to do much more of it. It's nice to be collaborating again.

In other news I'm working on some music for a new game by hero interactive. The makers of one of my all time geek out faves. It's called Microbe Kombat and the name is relatively self-explanatory. Jared Riley is a real nice guy. Needless to say, I would be delighted if this gig led to more like it. Composing for flash games is quite the rush.

Things are still sorta slow, but interesting things pop up more and more. I'm hopeful that within a year or two, I'll be looking at a viable income.

I leave you with a special gift.

That Hippo Showed Us

America strikes again

My involvement in the music industry behooves me to keep updated on the industry news. They are uber environmentalists. The band actually formed around the post traumatic creativity of Craig Minowa. Craig and his wife had a two year old boy and he died in the middle of the night. It wrecked their marriage. Craig remained on their farm and his wife left for a time. The Minowas have since reunited and put out several albums all of which deal directly with the very relevant and substantial issues. In my short time with Cloud Cult and can say that they are some of the most impressively humble and pure soles I've ever encountered in the music industry. Though their spiritual perspectives are different than mine, their music is filled with secret truths and hope. I encourage you to check them out as a band. Further, they are coming through Oregon soon and you should support them. They have are delightful live. The bring along two fine artists (one of which is Craig's wife) and the two make visual art wreckage in the background while the bound performs.

This video may give you some concept of what I see in them....

After you watch that video, I recommend you listen to another track by them here

While your at it. Read the lyrics :

----------------------

Bought myself a new look
Something gave me another chance to see
Each time, each time, I As of late there has been a need to work on my salsa and latin type writing. This morning I have been enjoying listening to music from various niches of spanish music. All though it doesn't really do much for my own musical development, here is a video that intrigued me. Looks like a BLAST. Too bad I don't understand a word they are saying.

Sean Cooper does it again...

behold, the end is upon us. Still haven't heard about the raffi song, I think we can assume (in part for the cause of self-protection) that some other lad sounded more like Jack White than I do. It was a rush to work on that, and you can't win them all.

Things are going well enough with the business, always mailing out more reels. I'm beginning to understand the language of rejection on the phone with some of these people. If they think you are worth talking to, then they talk to you. If they don't think that you are worth talking to, then they are 'in a session' or 'out of the office for a moment,' etc. Every now and then someone likes what they are hearing and you get some interest. What sucks is the sense of complete isolation from the people you are trying to reach. After a while you feel like maybe you are a lunatic or a stalker or something. All you can think about is getting your reel in that person's bubble and making them listen to it. Sometimes I even find myself day dreaming devious strategies for infiltrating their defenses. You hear crazy stories. One gentleman who is now quite successful actually dressed up as an easter bunny on easter or maybe it was cupid on v-day... Anyway he posed as a singing telegram and the bigwig he was trying to meet with was so impressed that he took his demo. Anyone who gives you attention or credit becomes your bff and you find yourself constantly wanting to call them and nag them. It's a comical, vile, and de-humanizing cycle. Some days you are the boar and some days you are the bunny.

Anyway I am indeed working hard and tirelessly to ensure you have at your fingertips the absolute best crop of flash games at your disposal. Don't laugh, flash games are the next pet rock.

This one is thanks to Eric N. It reminds of what I always thought Tokyo would be like, but wet. It also reminds me of a few childhood wave pool experiences, but about 14 times more populated.

-bpp

Charlie BIT me...

So this one is not so original, but oh man is it good.

I'm working on a comprehensive list of my favorite online flash games for you all to enjoy. I get tons of work done during the day. Really, I swear.

In other news, I just got back from Jared Wilk's wedding. It was a real treat to meet all of Jared's friends from St. Johns and from his community in North Carolina that he calls the "Jesus Core.' Those kids are mostly die-hard fundamentalists with thick books on all sorts of weighty veins of philosophy. Many of them strike me as a sort of accidental hippies. They aren't angry people, yet they manage to accidentally stumble upon all sorts of unconventional proclivities(big word point). They've got lots of love and it was a real honor to linger amongst them. For those of you who know Scottie Bitner(sp), he flew out as well so he and I sort of stuck together for much of the weekend.

I submitted a demo to Yessian music. It's a pontiac commercial. I don't know when I will hear back about that one. Still haven't heard back about raffi. I'll let you know if we get it, and of course I probably won't say anything if we don't get it.

kthatsall

babel

the idea that God hates the pride of man illuminates the outcome of many a spoiled venture. As time has rolled by, I've become further and further removed from what is, or was the June Umbrella. Every new audition has made my heart more and more weary. Any time you audition someone you are accepting the fact that you will more likely than not have to tell them that they aren't what you are looking for. This is a process that I simply do not care for. It is a lot of fun to write music. It's a lot of fun to play music, but all this has made me look deeper...

Why do I want to keep TJU alive? Is it because of how much I love music? Is it because I define myself through my performing ventures? Is it because I am looking back at years and years of desire and failure and success and simply wouldn't want to address the need for change even if it was poking my bottom?

All those things are true. The fact is, I am sort of a control freak. I have absolutely no problem welcoming other people and their musical contributions, but there are prerequisites. Namely that those people are competent at their respective instruments, and that those people understand the music I play. Besides that, I don't want to work with people I don't get along with, or people that have excessively dysfunctional moral compasses.

I have auditioned lots of musicians in the recent months. Many of them have been more accomplished than I am as musicians. The thing I have most recently realized is that exceptional bands often evolve from the humble beginnings of beginners. People who hear beautiful melodies and rhythms, but just haven't yet learned how to communicate with their bandmates, and haven't learned how to express their ideas in time and with eloquence. I for one, am beyond the stage in my life when I have the patience to facilitate the growing process that such musicians require. I am to old and stubborn I guess, although I am a ripe 24.

The fact is that all day I sit in my studio and write music with a substantial amount of liberty, though there numerable technical and creative reasons why my music can suffer, if there is a way I want something done, I am happy and capable of doing it that way, myself.

I will confess, I am not the most devout instrumentalist in the world. Just today I retook a guitar part maybe 30 times so that it was perfect. I do feel that I can, after many years, function well in my 'niche,' but I would not be so proud as to say that I am elite. I certainly am not. Anything substantial that I accomplish in the world of music is simply a result of hard work and providence.

Long story short, the 24 hours following this most recent auditioned were rather emotionally turbulent for me. I had a deep realization that what I was doing was not working, and that whatever may be, something needed to change. Mourning it was. Funny, mourning is the best word that I believe described my songwriting in TJU. I guess for some reason I sometimes find solace in mourning. Perhaps I believe in it's empathetic power.

It's simple. I am fighting tooth and nail to do what I love. I feel a strong sense of responsibility to my role as a family man, and am aware that the clock is ticking. All I do right now is write music, talk with business/creative types, record music, breathe music, etc. I absolutely love it. I find it OVERWHELMINGLY fulfilling. I am beginning to see that my performing career is only a small part of that. Still, it is so close to who I am. Abandoning it literally feels like self compromise. It feels in a way like lying, leaving your spouse, or simply a cop out. I am simply not interested in this bull shit idea that 'reality' sets in and that we realize what we can and can't do. It's bullshit. The greater truth is that we must find the balance between heartily serving our dependants, and heartily (violently) attempting to excel at what GOD has given us to do.

The flip side, is that sometimes God gives us something, but it's not what we think it is. Sometimes God gives us something to do and we shape it to meet our needs. Sometimes we get so blindly obsessed with this self-contrived pursuit that we don't even have the emotional capacity to loosen our death grip.

The ultimate goal is rest. I mean spiritual rest. The kind of rest you find when you are surrounded by safety and security. It is similar to the rest you find when you feel as though another human being would die for you, such that you are completely disinterested in the potential of any looming danger. This is a rest that is only found in the presence of God. For me, I must find it within myself to rest. To release my death grip. To let go of my desperate desire for something that perhaps God doesn't want. There was a time in my life when I did not believe that such submission could be beneficial, as I did not believe in a God of Love. For each one of us, it is in our nature to resist and doubt God's love. Still, I and my music have come through many strange circumstances, and I am very near being able to say that should I submit it, God will indeed likely hand it right back to me as he has done in the past. If he does not, I will be okay. My commitment to music is no longer selfish. It would be better described as conviction. CONVICTION.

hope is a river. God grant us the strength to not tarry on the bank.

jukebox

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v18.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D2dd53104bff63899%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331271160%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D140310CAFC811E9B954366A5D552D45B914D2C80.112121FDCB34A6C0A05D66D152C2FAF6AFC109C2%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D2dd53104bff63899%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D6MDeVP8xKndRmWmtQTTho9hqQrE&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

So you guys should tell me if you think it's lame or cool when I video blog. We got to see friends and family and spend the better part of a week just relaxing with nephews, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts and uncles. At the Chalupsky house we spent lots of time playing bumper pool, settlers of catan, and cards. At my parents we played a heck of a lot of nintendo wii. I've officially decided that I hate the game 'Mario Party.' I have plenty of words on that I won't share. On the other hand, Wii sports is an absolute blast, and there is an amazing game called lego star wars where you go around hacking the heck out of little lego star wars figurines with sweet moves asnd a lightsaber. I had a fairly consistant (though not overwhelming) desire to get back to writing music and promoting Polyphone Music. Both because of my sense of duty as a provider and because the creative process brings me absurd amounts of satisfaction.

My sister had her baby this month. His name is Corban and he is about as laid back as they come. He's a wonderful baby. I really look forward to getting to know him.

Phil and Michelle Cacka came down before Christmas and did a photo shoot with me. Frankly I felt and still feel I am nearly as good looking as most of beautiful Portland types that decorate the streets. Nonetheless I got a bunch of free pictures and they look very good. You should check them out, along with Phil and all things via lucis.

My favorite gift this year was a 6 speed road bike that Luke Zedwick built for me. It was funded by my wife (with a little help from my personal savings) but Luke did the foot work. It is beautiful and fast. I am very thankful for my new bike, and am hopeful it will help me loose a few lbs.

This year's christmas had a subtle atmosphere of mourning for all of us on the Chalupsky side. While there was much cheer, it is apparent that everyone is still slowly recovering their religious constitution. Faith is not easy. In fact I find it wearying at times beyond language. Still, my temptation is to hide inside disillusionment. The better path is not a circle. My path has been a circle for some time now. Quite frankly, I feel that the existance of myself, my wife, and my descendants teeters on my commitment to escape this cycle.

My love to all those of you who I call friends. I hope we can together abide.

-b
Marketing/networking/whatever you call it is something I am quite familiar with. I have done it for years now in the rock scene. Making a connection and ever so gently trying to assert yourself. It's the sort of thing that can get you very anxious, very fast. The times when it's especially nerve-racking are when you are across the line from someone who wields the power to really accelerate your career. It's hard to interact with creative people that you could talk for hours with over drinks, and be so concerned with how you are presenting yourself. Carefully detailing every syllable that leaves your tongue so that you sound extremely professional. Then also you don't want to sound like you are trying to hard. Ultimately it's stressful because you know that if you can win their interest, it just gets harder. After that you have to win their confidence, and then you have to win their confidence again, and again. My experience with customer service (from my previous life as a painter) is that you can really let yourself get worked up over how your client perceives you. The healthy way to approach a client is to realize that you are what you are, and you can only do your very best, and that's all there is to it.

Monica's page will be up soon, I expect that will mark the first 'job' that I've done as Polyphone Music. I've also been working with Andrew of Splint Media/Minute Morning on some sound logos/backing tracks for the new M.M. podcast. That should be a lot of fun, so do check it out. I have gotten some calls from some of the producers and important people in the advertising industry I've been contact. No jobs yet. I guess that's fine since I've only been on the phone 3 days.

turkey turkey turkey turkey turkey turkey turkey turkey

This week The June Umbrella had a band practice with a full line-up, even a keyboard player. This is a completely new group of musicians and nothing is set in stone but I'm pretty much settled on using everybody. It's a really great group. The best thing is that everyone is the type of person that really values music and wants to do it for real. This is something I have gotten closer and closer to. I am hopeful that perhaps I finally attained it.

The fact is, since mid-summer I have been missing something that to most people seems very insignificant. There's this feeling I get when I'm in a band room with people I care about, writing songs that I can really connect with. For me there is almost nothing that compares to it. I once explained to my mother by asking her when she feels like everything is well and she is being who she is supposed to be. She replied 'around the dinner table when family is together.' My obsession with this experience seems a bit creepy to me. I suppose my relatively continue exposure to others like me propagates the whole ordeal.

Polyphone is going well, I am finishing up an instrumental piece for 240 Noble Graphic design, a company that my sister-in-law, Monica is starting. I am the sort of person who most effectively produces results when I have one simple task before me. For example:

-remove essential info from laptop
-re-install laptop
-pack laptop
-ship laptop
-clean office
-hang sound proofing
-prepare for dreamweaver tutoring session
-cook dinner

total elapsed time: Appx 4 days and 1 hour

another example:
write witty jingle

total elapsed time: appx 2 hours.

or better still:
write 20 witty jingles

total elapsed time: 1 week

Still, I proceed. Hopefully there's something to be said for skill development. There certainly is something to be said for getting from point a to point b...

In other news I've been thinking about a book I've been reading by Eugene Peterson entitled 'A Long Obedience in the Same direction.' He's the gentleman that wrote 'the message,' a version of the bible I care to keep my distance from. This book was recommended to me by Chris, the associate pastor at Evergreen Community church. It has intermittently pleased and offed me. I must say though, the most recent chapter on joy has led me in a good direction. It is a very simple revisiting of christianity and the joy it brings. Having only glanced at the title of the chapter my mind went wandering into times past. Times when I did not have so many reservations. Times when the best part of my day was rising and experiencing the essential joys of Christianity. Along with this recollection did not come sadness, but rather a sense of hope that I could, by some unknown means, finally retain that lost sense of spiritual ecstasy which surpasses all boundaries of logic.

It is, and has always been an issue of trust. Why should I commune with a spirit for whom I have distrust? My only option is to make myself vulnerable. To allow him to take away my anger and sense of abandon and to fill it with new peace. I believe this gift is given. I believe it is a gift that beckons our punctuality. I believe it is at the very center of human fulfillment. All my questions and conclusions and floundering can simply not withstand it's power.

-start-

So, about me. My name is Brian Hall. I was born in Everett, grew up in Marysville and Corvallis, went to school in Eugene, and am now married and abiding in Portland. It is here I sit in my office and write music for commercials and films and radio and web pages and, and, and. I don't know how I would put it, exactly, but it's sorta like I woke up and realized that if I didn't take risks in life, then I would probably be unhappy. So here I am in the midst of a massive investment of time and money. My web page is quite nearly finished. My portfolio is ever growing. Here's a ridiculous spot that I found in a database and customized. The fx aren't golden, but I work with what I've got.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v3.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D78db239a2d04dedc%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331271160%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7F6BD00B5EAB7B4DB6412812617D0C5BAED99702.8C70CD6C4CEC2DA05D7BB8B2B571C9E965E5D46%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D78db239a2d04dedc%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DifNGlfX8m25DIN2gWxQgieB0UNI&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

In the wonderful world of rock bands. I am looking for a bass player. So far things are progressing, though slowly. Amy and I had a wonderful time at a party this weekend. The hosting parties were the Halls (not us, members of Oh, Darling) and the Endicotts (Jake E. is in Jonah) we also got to hang out with Aaron from Dr. Theopolis, David from Derby, and Dean from Climber. People there were so nice and I genuinely felt at home with a new crowd in Portland which is something I thought would take a long time. It was just nice that a lot of the people there were just normal and kind. They weren't pretentious, and they we're angry tweakers. Still, no bass player surfaced. I'm not surprised, I wasn't expecting that to happen.

All in due time.
